About Trash Toilets

They say you can tell a lot about a person by examining their trash. So when someone throws away the most private appliance in their home, what does that say about them?

In Summer 2008, something bizarre and wonderful happened. In the course of a single day, we found a half-dozen toilets within a quarter mile radius. Was the local plumber offering two for one deals? Had there been a secret water main explosion that forced all our neighbors to replace their porcelain? We had to document this unusual phenomenon (to prove it to our friends), so we took pictures of the abandoned toilets. This was the first in a seemingly endless chain of encounters with trashed toilets.

I found that I am strangely enchanted to find toilets which have been left on the curb for the garbageman. To find (and photograph) this most private vehicle, exiled from the home, its history opened to public scrutiny. A lot of things can happen on a toilet: sickness and health, love and hate, birth and death. I contemplate all of the wonderful and horrible things the toilet has seen. I become curious about the reason for the toilet’s banishment, and sometimes, who the hell would have bought a toilet that color in the first place.
